BLUFF BARBECUES ALL SYSTEMS GO
The Devonport City Council wishes to advise that the one barbecue that was not working late last week at the Mersey Bluff Precinct has now been repaired and is fully functional.
Council electricians found that the switchboard at the sound shell that feeds the power to the barbecue had been vandalised.
The barbecues are fully serviced four times per year and cleaners who clean them daily do visual checks and report any damages to Council. The barbecues at the Mersey Bluff Precinct are still under a maintenance contract and Council has followed up with the contractor to ensure that they are working correctly. Council also appreciates the input from the public letting us know if something is not operational.
Council would also like anyone who witnesses’ vandalism of any form within the city to contact the police to ensure that others are not inconvenienced by senseless acts.
PARKING CONCESSION VOUCHERS
Pensioner car parking concession vouchers will be printed and posted in late January 2012. If you have any queries regarding this matter, please contact our Parking Coordinator, Danielle, on 6424 0511.
TRAFFIC INFRINGEMENTS
You may not be aware that the State Government has increased traffic infringment notice amounts. As these infringments have not increased since 1999, the logic for the increase was annual CPI x 10 years = 30% increase (approximately). The main infringement amounts that affect Council are:
$35 are now $50 i.e. exceed time in time zone
$50 are now $70 i.e. park in loading zone, bus zone, taxi zone etc
$80 are now $100 i.e. no stopping, yelow lines, too close to school crossing etc
Parking in a disabled zone without a permit is now $150 (was $80). This infringement amount was increased significantly as a deterrent for the public to realise the importance of not parking in these spaces without a permit.
These new amounts were effective as of 30 November 2011.

INDOOR POOL PLAN ENDORSED
When work on Devonport's new Indoor Aquatic Centre is completed in May 2013, Devonport will be home to one of the most comprehensive indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities equal to any in regional Australia. The state-of-the-art complex will incorporate the current outdoor facilities, a 25 metre indoor eight lane pool, infant awareness pool, warm water pool, foyer, fitness gym, change rooms and a cafe/kiosk. The $13.96 million project will be the biggest ever undertaken by Council and has taken many years of planning, submission writing and talks with Federal and State Governments to get to this point.
"We are very pleased that the plan's costs have been kept in check and we can now look forward to the construction of another key facility that will further enhance Devonport as the leading sporting, commercial and cultural centre on the North West Coast," Devonport City Council General Manager, Ian McCallum said. "The health and wellbeing benefits to not only our community but to those along the North West Coast will be immeasurable. To hear the excitement in the community about this venture is very reassuring because we at Council want the very best for everyone but realise that these facilities require a great deal of money both in construction and with ongoing costs".
To help alleviate some of the costs and to ensure the project runs on time, Council will be forced to close the outdoor facilities for the summer of 2012/13. "To ensure we run on time and to make adjustments to the outdoor facility, the builders need access to all areas and unfortunately we have had to make the tough call to close the outdoor pool for the 2012 summer," Mr McCallum said.
To find out more about the processes and design of the new Centre, check out our FAQ's or contact Council on (03) 6424 0511. An artist's impression of the outside of the facility, architects plans for the indoor facility, and overall plans for the Centre can also be viewed online.

MAKE A SPLASH IN DEVONPORT THIS SUMMER
Sunlight reflecting on sparkling blue water, the smell of sunscreen and the sound of happy laughter… all unmistakable signs of summer. And there’s no better place to spend long warm sunny days than at Devonport’s Aquatic Centre.
Whether it be for some serious exercise or just a lazy day in the sun – this community facility has everything you need.
Located at the western end of Steele Street in the Don Reserve, the Aquatic Centre is fully supervised with accredited Life Guards. It has three pleasantly temperate pools (for different age and skill levels), an exciting water slide, toilets and changerooms, a picnic area and free electric barbecue, as well as a well-stocked kiosk, a basketball hoop and volleyball net.
Best of all, you don’t need to wait for Summer proper, because the season officially commenced on Monday 10 October, and will be open seven days a week from 6am through to 7pm.
Pricing options are designed to suit casual visitors, spectators, families and pensioners, including day and season passes. To find out more, call the friendly Aquatic Centre staff on 6424 9029.
MICROCHIPPING INFORMATION FOR DOG OWNERS
Devonport City Council would like to remind all dog owners that as of Friday 1 July 2011, if they have a dog and it is over six months of age it must be microchipped.
If you are buying a dog after 1 July, it will be your responsibility to ensure that it is microchipped – either before you buy it or immediately after you take possession of it.
Exemptions exist from compulsory microchipping for specified racing greyhounds, specified hunting dogs and all working dogs or if a veterinarian issues a certificate stating that to implant the dog with a microchip may adversely affect the health of the animal.
To have your dog microchipped, contact your local veterinary surgeon, animal welfare agencies like the Dogs Home or RSPCA, or selected pet shops who can either microchip your dog or provide you with information as to where you can have it microchipped. Read more...
STEWART STREET REDEVELOPMENT
The transformation of Stewart Street is continuing... With its tree lined central median, widened footpaths and outdoor dining areas, Stewart Street has been totally transformed. The narrower lane widths and green space edges have changed the look and the feel of the street.
From an area that was dominated by a wide black road surface and hastily moving vehicles, the traffic has now slowed and people are crossing the street with confidence in a very attractive environment for shopping and business. Stewart Street has been transformed from a car street into a people street.
Stage two has commenced, the makeover will continue at the Rooke and Stewart Street intersection. Read more...
